There are six Sundays after Easter, followed by Pentecost Sunday, the seventh, June 8, 2003. During these weeks, the Bible readings for our morning service will present Jesus’ appearances to his followers after his resurrection.

“He saw and believed”
(John 20:8).
|
This Sunday, the New Testament reading is from John 20, especially vs 19–29, which speak of Thomas, Jesus’ disciple, who doubted that Jesus had really risen from the dead.
But the entire chapter belongs before us as a whole document of Jesus’ earlier post-resurrection conversations with his followers. (Study it to see how Jesus let himself be known to his friends, and how they reacted.)
Also at this service, two adults, Lloyd and Bev Agee of Bucyrus, will make their public profession of the Christian faith and receive the sacrament of baptism. By this, they become members of Christ’s holy and universal (or “catholic”) church and of the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Bucyrus. We ordinarily baptize adults by pouring water on their heads. Since baptism is a human response to the Word and Spirit of God, that liturgy will follow the sermon.
