There are six Sundays after Easter, followed by Pentecost Sunday, the seventh, June 8, 2003. During these weeks, the Bible readings for our morning service will present Jesus’ appearances to his followers after his resurrection. Last Sunday, we looked at John 20, especially the way those closest to Jesus became convinced of his resurrection, through the empty tomb and their own encounters with him.

This Sunday, the Gospel reading is from Luke 24:13–35, which speaks of two men—Cleopas and an unnamed friend—on their walk from Jerusalem to Cleopas’ home in the village of Emmaus. The time is Easter afternoon and evening, but they do not know of Jesus’ resurrection. While they walk and talk about their disappointment, a third person joins them. At the end of the journey, he turns out to be Jesus, who breaks bread with them and then vanishes. They say to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (24:32).

In the sermon, “Road and Table,” Pastor Walters will speak in the voice of the unnamed person in this story.

We will celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper in this service, with the elders serving the congregation in the pews. We invite all baptized Christians of any denomination to join with us in this holy meal.
