Luke 10:7 Paul in Athens (Acts 17:22-31)

In this passage, Paul is arguing his case before Greek philosophers in Athens. These people are accustomed to discussion and debate and are not easily convinced of any new idea. However, they do love to hear new ideas. Paul is a master of well-thought-out arguments. He is aware that these people are not familiar with the history and faith that is contained in the Hebrew scriptures. However, he establishes common ground and even compliments them on their faith. He says, "...Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way, for as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, 'To an un known god.' What, therefore, you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you" (Acts 17:22-23, NRSV). He goes on to explain the theology of Christ.

Paul has a good working knowledge of his faith. He is therefore able to convey that faith to others, even those who have no foundation on which to build. We need to learn from his example. If we are to be true disciples of Christ, we need to know as much about our faith as possible. We will encounter people today that will also have no background in faith. We should be able to explain in simple terms why we believe what we believe.

Psalm 23:4 God's Spirit Among Us (John 14:15-21)

Christ is giving encouragement to his disciples (and to us) for when they (or we) feel alone. He is reminding everyone that, even though he may not be physically present, that his Spirit—the Holy Spirit—will be, not only present with us but also within us. This is a closeness that cannot be explained: It has to be experienced.

Speaking of the Holy Spirit, Christ says, "...You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you; I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you" (John 14:17b-18, NRSV). The promise of God is always with us and within us. That should give us hope as we face whatever life sends our way.
